Fortunately, there are lots of tried and true activities you can do on the trail that’ll keep kids from getting bored. Among them is My Uncle Went Hiking.
Number off for player order. The first player says, “My uncle went hiking and saw something with the letter A.” The second player must name something that starts with the letter A and could be seen on the trail, such as “animal tracks” then continues with “My uncle went hiking and saw something with the letter B.” The third player in turn must name something that starts with the letter B that could be seen on the trail, such as “boulders” then continues with “My uncle went hiking and saw something with the letter C.” The round ends when a player can’t come up with something seen on the trail or gives an answer that doesn’t start with the correct letter.
