Generally, exploring and discovery is enough for kids, but sometimes even they can grow bored with that and become restless. Remember that they naturally have shorter attention spans than adults.

While hiking, have the children can find objects along the trail that match each letter in the alphabet, beginning with A. As an object is found, the child calls it out, and the group moves on to the next letter. This can be turned into a competition in which the child calling out the most letters wins.
