Hiking activity for children: Butterfly nets

Once you start seeing butterflies in your yard, consider bringing a butterfly net on the trail. Catching the butterflies is a fun challenge for kids, and if you bring a magnifying glass to look at what you’ve caught, can make for some literally eye-popping discoveries.

Materials: Butterfly net, magnifying glass.

Ages: 5 and up.

Before Kieran, I taught middle school students in New Mexico and Wisconsin, served as an infantryman in the Army National Guard, and worked in newspapers.
